Unity and Obedience

Written by Carlos Viera (Freshman)

On the day of Pentecost, as recorded in Acts 2:1-2, we witnessed a crucial and transformative moment in the history of the Church. This event took place in a context of obedience and unity. The text tells us that “they were all gathered together in one place.” Those disciples who remained after Jesus’ death and resurrection were distressed and afraid but simultaneously united in prayer, awaiting the fulfillment of Jesus’ promise. The word “gathered” in Greek is homothumadon, which means “to be unanimous, to have mutual consent, to agree, to have unity in a group.” The disciples were in intellectual unanimity, emotional harmony, and agreement about the purpose of the newly founded Church.

In the next verse, we read: “Suddenly there came…”. This moment was not in the plans of men because human beings cannot produce the action of the Holy Spirit; no one can schedule a revival. It can only come from God and through God. Jesus had already made the promise, but it was necessary to obey the command he had given so that they could see the promise fulfilled. Waiting was an act of obedience. And they waited together. Obedience to Jesus’ word and unity were necessary to fulfill Jesus’ promise. Jesus’ command was evident: “Stay together in Jerusalem and wait for the promise of my Father, which I have spoken to you about” (Acts 1:4). And so, they were filled with the presence of the Holy Spirit powerfully and abundantly and, from that moment on, the Church began to fulfill its purpose of witnessing to the message of Christ and bringing salvation to the world.

This event shows how obedience and unity are fundamental in the life of the Church. The Holy Spirit filled the house where the disciples were gathered, symbolizing God’s powerful presence among those who remain faithful and united in His word. This descent of the Holy Spirit marked the beginning of the Church as a global movement, highlighting the transforming power of God’s presence when His people are aligned with His will.

Therefore, we must strive to maintain the same unity and obedience that characterized the first disciples in this day and age. Coming together in prayer with a common purpose established by Jesus is vital to seeing the divine promises fulfilled in our lives and communities. Unity in prayer and obedience to Jesus’ word not only promotes harmony between members of the faith community but also attracts the presence of the Holy Spirit in a powerful and transforming way.

When we are united in the exact purpose of prayer, we face challenges such as diversity of opinion and geographical dispersion. However, these challenges can be overcome by a commitment to dialog, mutual understanding, and a joint effort to maintain unity in prayer and action. By being aligned with God’s will and obedient to Jesus’s word, we will witness the fulfillment of His promises, seeing His power and presence manifested in our lives and the Church as a whole.

So, the importance of coming together with a common purpose of prayer established by Jesus cannot be underestimated. If we are obedient in this unity and aligned with God’s will, we will see the things that Jesus promised us come to pass. Unity in prayer, obedience to Jesus’ word, and emotional and intellectual harmony are essential keys to living out God’s purposes in a whole and impactful way. Since the day of Pentecost, the Church’s history teaches us that when we are united and obedient, God can accomplish great things through us for His glory and the advancement of His kingdom.
