Balancing Life, Work, and Faith: Finding Harmony in the Chaos

Written by Rian Dickson (Sophomore)

Balancing life, work, and faith has been one of the most challenging—and rewarding—journeys of my life. There’s an undeniable tension between the demands of everyday responsibilities and the call to live a life deeply rooted in Christ. But through it all, I’ve learned that balance isn’t about perfection; it’s about priorities.  My name is Rian Dickson and I’m pursuing a degree in the Creative Arts with a concentration in Technology and Production.

When I felt the Lord calling me back to Oregon, I wrestled with the decision for months. At the time, I was working in ministry in Louisiana, deeply connected to my community, and happy where I was. Leaving felt impossible, but God’s call was undeniable. It wasn’t just about uprooting my life—it was about trusting Him to provide as I pursued His purpose.

Now, as I navigate full-time work, college classes, ministry, and creative projects, I see how essential it is to intentionally prioritize my faith. Mornings have become sacred times for prayer and Scripture, not because I have extra time but because I can’t afford not to make time. Even on my busiest days, I’ve learned that starting with God centers me for everything else.

Work is another area that demands balance. As someone passionate about creative work and my education, I often find myself juggling deadlines and expectations. In these moments, I remind myself that my work is not just for the sake of work—it’s an opportunity to glorify God. Colossians 3:23 encourages me: “Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.” This mindset shifts my perspective and helps me see my tasks as acts of worship, even when they feel mundane.

But it hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve experienced burnout, those moments when everything feels like too much, and I wonder if I’m falling short everywhere. It’s in those seasons I’ve been reminded that grace is not just for others; it’s for me too. Letting go of perfectionism and resting in God’s sufficiency has been transformative.

Community has been another lifeline. Whether it’s the growing group of women in my Bible study or my supportive classmates and mentors at New Hope Christian College, I’ve learned the importance of surrounding myself with people who encourage my faith and hold me accountable. They remind me that I’m not alone in the balancing act.

Ultimately, balancing life, work, and faith comes down to trust. Trusting that when I put God first, He will guide my steps. Trusting that He knows my needs even before I voice them. And trusting that His plans are always better than my own.

So, if you’re struggling to find balance, start with Him. Lay your schedule, your worries, and your dreams at His feet. Life will always be busy, but when faith is your foundation, everything else falls into place—not perfectly, but purposefully.

And that makes all the difference.
