Did you know that you are an Ambassador sent to a foreign country? This world is not our home; we were placed here with a specific purpose and job description. Our protection and provision come from another place. However, it isn’t uncommon for some ambassadors to get entrenched in the affairs, angst, and troubles of the country to which they were sent. How are you doing as an Ambassador? Read on in this devotional by Pastor Wayne Cordeiro, Alumni and Chancellor at NHCC…
Today’s Reading: 2 Kings 17; 2 Chronicles 28; Psalms 46; James 3
Scripture
“God is my refuge and my strength, my ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, I will not fear though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the sea, though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging.” (Psalm 46:1-3)
Observation
These are confident words! It’s almost as if the one speaking is detached from what’s happening around him. He speaks from inside the chaos, but the chaos is not inside of him! He speaks with such assurance because he is receiving his certainty and poise from a different location altogether!
It’s like an Ambassador from the US assigned to another country that may be struggling with inner turmoil. The US Ambassador is simply a high-ranking diplomat representing his country as an official envoy. Still, he is never to get embroiled in the affairs and become entangled in the fray. He holds a “diplomatic immunity” from his home country, which keeps him objective and unbiased, for his sole purpose is to broker peace and aid the nation into which he was sent.
Application
Paul the Apostle explains it well in 2 Cor. 5:20 – “We are, therefore, Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.”
In this one succinct verse, we find our identity and job description. We are to be 1) representatives of the King of Kings, and 2) our job description is to reconcile people who may be separated from God.
As Ambassadors, we need to understand the turmoil and struggles, but we are not to get sucked into the vacuum around us. Instead, our job is to stay free from the vortex and lead as many as possible back to the Keeper of our souls. God will provide for us. He will protect us, and one day, we will return to our home country and hear Him say, “Well done, my good and faithful … Ambassador.”
Prayer
Father, please remind me often of who I am and what I am doing here. I must remain a faithful Ambassador from my home country. You sent us here as visiting diplomats, but our citizenship is not of this world. May my heart reflect Yours, and may my words be the voice of an Ambassador.
