Written by Abby Galvez (Junior at NHCC)
Each year, the Lord highlights a new word and beautifully unfolds it in profound ways. Through thoughtful prayer, I sought guidance on His intentions for my life. As I took deep breaths, it became clear that His message was simply to “breathe.”
My name is Abby Galvez, I’m a Junior, and my degree is in Ministry Leadership focused on Interdisciplinary Studies at New Hope Christian College.
Last season, my word was “wait.” I took a step back and decided to take the semester off, which allowed the Lord to rejuvenate my spirit in light of unfortunate life circumstances. The weight of anxiety was overwhelming, and it was hard to rest. However, this break taught me how to wait on the Lord and be still. God filled my heart with peace and reminded me of the fundamentals of my identity. I rediscovered the joy of living, laughing, and being present. In moments of distress, the Lord extended His grace abundantly and reassured me of His goodness.
While waiting, I learned that His plan for me was far greater than I could have imagined. Amid the uncertainty, I prayed for the opportunity to return to New Hope in the spring. I dedicated myself to working overnight shifts at my job to cover my tuition and reconnect with my peers. To my astonishment, after working all summer, He provided me with a financial program that significantly increased my savings. This was a clear sign that God wanted me to return to New Hope to complete my degree. I am thrilled to be back, and I feel better than ever.
The Lord delivered me from anxiety and depression during this season of waiting. I believe that this semester will be the time when I can truly breathe. My scripture for this year is Matthew 11:28-29, which states, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” I find it freeing that Jesus invites us to find rest in Him when we are struggling and that he lifts our burdens. My daily prayer is, “I will come to you, Lord, and in You, I will find rest.” I urge you to take a moment to breathe during this season and seek comfort in His presence. The Lord is with you!
