Powder Puff is a new sport that has descended upon the New Hope campus. It all began when a New Hope student suggested a powder puff game might be fun for the girls on campus. Sean McCartin, who has coached several high school Powder Puff teams in the past and thoroughly enjoyed those experiences, jumped at the chance. A call to our neighboring Christian college here in Eugene, Northwest Christian University, resulted in a scheduled “Superbowl” of Powder Puff games on February 25th.
The ladies are gearing up for the big game that will be held under the lights at South Eugene football field at 6 pm. The goal is to recreate an authentic football environment, so the Deacons lady athletes can get a taste of the physical aspect of the game as well as the strategy involved. The team has a somewhat extensive playbook on offense and can as well move in and out of a variety of defensive schemes as needed. There are five other coaches from New Hope staffers who are contributing to the preparation for the big game. The NHCC Athletic Department has provided new jerseys for the football players as well!
Practices have been a blast, with a mix of conditioning, drills and scrimmages. There has been a great turnout from the girls with twenty-eight participating. It is another fun activity that builds family and friendship within the New Hope family, and additionally brings us together with our fellow college “friends” at NCU. The hope is that this will become an annual event.
The “Superbowl” of Powder Puffs pitting the Beacons (NCU) and Deacons (NHCC) has adopted Food for Lane County as an organization that can benefit from this sporting event. This is football with a mission. We are asking all spectators to consider bringing high protein food items as a donation when entering the game. Admission is free, but this gives people an opportunity, if they so desire, to support a fantastic organization while enjoying some gripping gridiron action.
